Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II took to his verified Instagram account to speak on the new law the northern community is pursuing, which he says will handle cases of domestic violence and abuse, as well as instances where a man marries too many wives and has children he cannot afford to clothe and feed.
“You should all come back to your senses and stop these barbaric acts because we will not allow these to continue in Kano,” the Islamic ruler said.
“I have warned all district heads, village heads, ward heads and imams to also desist from the bad habit of beating their wives and whoever among them is reported to me to have beaten up his wife, would outrightly lose his title.”
And that’s not all.
The Emir said he already has an 80-paged proposal he said would be submitted to the State House of Assembly for consideration and passage into law. This proposal, if made into law, will deal with abusive men, including Islamic leaders, plus it will handle cases where men marry more wives than they can take care of.
This is not the first time the ruler would be making revolutionary statements/propositions. In the past, he has spoken out against domestic abuse, talked extensively on child marriages, and taken a stand on religious tolerance. Now, he is delving deep into the major issues that have plagued the north.
Will he succeed?

I won’t be backing down from making law against poor men seeking to marry more than one wife.
Although the law was not meant to stop Muslims from marrying up to four wives, it regulates how a man should treat his wives and children according to the tents of Islam. We are going meet on Wednesday this week to review the over 80 pages of the law and make the necessary adjustment before presenting it to the State House of Assembly for passage into law.
Our people are facing serious challenges in their family affairs. We have heard series of complaints where a father forced his daughter to marry someone against her wish. We have heard so many cases where people marry additional wives while they could not feed them well, clothe them well or give them good shelter even though they have the means to do so.
In this case, the proposed law provides that, a court of law would take something out of the man’s wealth to feed his family, give them shelter and clothes. In the event the man makes any attempt to resist the court’s directives, then the law takes necessary action against him. If you know, your salary cannot take care of more than one wife, you should not get additional wife.
