A 33 year-old trader, Maduka Eze, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on a charge of stealing an association’s N100,000.
Eze, a resident of Calvary Street, Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu said the accused committed the offence on Dec. 18 at Dopemu on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
He alleged that the accused as the treasurer absconded with the N100,000 belonging to Umuezeukwu United Brothers Association.
Nwosu said the accused was named the treasurer of the association’s end of the year party.
“The association organised an end of the year party and the accused was in charge of the money raised.
“After the party, the accused was nowhere to be found and all efforts made to recover the money proved unsuccessful.
“The accused was later arrested on Feb. 25 but could not provide the money,” he told the court.
The offence contravened section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence attracts three years imprisonment.
The accused pleaded innocence of the offence and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties
in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya, adjourned the case to March 22 for mention.
