Playboy Magazine Founder, Hugh Hefner Dies At 91

Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine died on Wednesday at the age of 91, according to a statement by Playboy Enterprises.

Born on April 9, 1926, Hefner launched Playboy Enterprises, Inc., in 1953 — the same year as the namesake magazine’s first edition, featuring a nude Marilyn Monroe.

“Hugh M. Hefner, the American icon who in 1953 introduced the world to Playboy magazine and built the company into one of the most recognizable American global brands in history, peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones,” a spokesperson for Hefner said in a statement to PEOPLE.
