No fewer than two persons were reportedly killed following fresh conflict between Eggon youths and Hausa residents at the Barkin-Kogi area of Sabon-Ginda in Lafia East Development Area of Nasarawa State.
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that fight started when some Eggon youths in the area were allegedly prevented by some Hausa youths from clearing a farm.
The Hausa youths were said to have asked their Eggon counterparts to obtain clearance from the state government before they would be allowed to carry out their task.
A violent quarrel reportedly ensued leading to the killing of two last week Monday.
It was gathered that some Eggon youths attacked an Hausa youth who was fishing at Barkin-Kogi area of Sabon-Ginda. An Eggon youth also suffered machete injuries after he was ambushed by some Hausa youths in reprisal for the killing of the Hausa youth.
Finding by our correspondent revealed that the presence of the policemen drafted to the area averted further escalation of the violence.
Speaking on the incident, the traditional ruler of Assakio, Chief Osula Inarigu, called on both groups to sheathe their swords and allow peace to reign.
The paramount ruler expressed disappointment over persistent crisis in the area saying, “This is farming season, why should we always harm ourselves; crisis doesn’t bring peace apart from disunity and hostility among us.”
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Idirisu Kennedy said some arrests had been made in connection to the crisis, but denied the reported loss of lives.
He said, “The incident happened last week Monday and the command had since deployed some of its men in the area in order to avert any break down of law and order and to prevent any future crisis.”
