A total of 4,403 primary school teachers in Ebbonyi State have failed a screening test conducted by investigating team set up by the state Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) to screen the teachers and rid the system of quacks.
Similarly, no fewer than 105 teachers operating in the state have no teaching qualification, while 19 of them are not physically fit for the classroom.
Chairman of the boards investigating committee, Prof Anthony Ani disclosed this in Abakaliki, while presenting the committee’s report to the board at the weekend.
He said that over 9,000 teachers were screened during the exercise; out of the figure 437 of the teachers have TC 11 certificates, adding that over 50% of primary school teachers in the state are without original certificates.
“More than half of the population of primary school teachers in the state were without original certificates in their profession.
“The board should as a matter of urgency compile names of teachers, especially those who present statement of results, testimonials, photocopies and forward such names to acclaimed graduating institutions for verification and authentication,” he said.
